Some Forties Football Again
While the Second World War raged in Europe and the Pacific in the Fall of 1944, there was still football to be played in Green Bay, Wisconsin. All of those patriotic men and women who were working so hard in support of the war industries needed some good sporting action to help them unwind in those trying times. In today’s photo we see not one, but two future Pro Football Hall of Famers at work for the Packers’ offense. All-star end Don Hutson runs with the ball, while back Tony Canadeo has his eyes on the next opponent to feel his wrath. Canadeo would miss the following season while serving in the armed forces. It’s too bad that film from those days is relatively rare, as we’d like to see extensive footage of these two — and the Green Bay teams of that era — in action. Green Bay would go on to win the N.F.L. title that year... their last until the Lombardi era.
