1991 NFL Draft • Brett Favre Analysis

As our long-time readers know, we will from time to time post interesting things that we've seen in online auctions. This item, from a 2016 Heritage Auctions event, definitely fits the “we need to share this” criteria. It is a binder from the Atlanta Falcons’ scouting department, prepared for the 1991 NFL Draft. While only a part of the binder’s contents are pictured, the analysis of Southern Mississippi QB Brett Favre that we do see is quite interesting indeed. Let’s let the auction description take it from here:

“1991 Atlanta Falcons Draft Picks Scouting Reports, Combine Photographs, Etc. - With Historically Significant Brett Favre Documents! 

“It seemed like Brett Favre's career was doomed before it began, when in 1991 the Atlanta Falcons went against head coach Jerry Glanville’s wishes and drafted the Southern Mississippi standout 33rd overall. Glanville spoke about the pick as only the fiery Perrysburg, Ohio native could, saying it would take a plane crash for him to put Favre into the game. Glanville looked pretty smart after Favre finally did get in the game, throwing his first NFL regular season pass that resulted in an interception returned for a touchdown. Favre only attempted four passes in his Falcons career, but nevertheless, this was the where it all started for the 2016 Hall of Fame inductee, who will go down as one of the best quarterbacks ever to take the field.”

“Presented here is one of the most historically significant lots representing the Ol’ Gunslinger and three-time league MVP. It is the original Atlanta Falcons scouting report for the team’s entire ’91 NFL Draft, presented in its original binder (some separation at the binding, but still intact). Never-before-seen original NFL Combine 8”x10” photographs are included for each player, in addition to handwritten and photo copies of scouting reports and other intriguing documents. The Brett Favre section includes 16 original pages in all, while several scouts and coaches described him as: “A player that makes it happen,” “Is tough and can zip it in,” “Rushes a lot of throws” and much more. Brett’s auto accident before his senior year in college is also a heavy topic in the reports: “Several origins bruises, had 30 inches of dead intestines removed.”

“A must-have for the advanced Favre collector or NFL historian — or the Pro Football Hall of Fame, for that matter.”

Interesting/Troubling News...

This is flying under the radar, unless you actually have seats in the first eight rows at Lambeau Field: 

“NFL teams have been told they’ll be able to sell camera-visible signage to local sponsors for the first time during the '20 season, sources said, a step one sales executive said would “significantly” defray pandemic-related revenue losses. 

“Under a plan shared with team presidents on Tuesday, the first six to eight rows of seating in every stadium (including on-field suites) will be off limits to fans this season. That move is officially to protect players, coaches and team staff from coronavirus exposure, but it would also free up that space to become lucrative sponsorship assets.”

Once a source of revenue (greater than that paid by season ticket holders) is established, will it last only one season?

Packers Send Out Face Masks

We paid for both of our 2020 season ticket accounts on June 1st — the extended deadline — and shortly thereafter received two envelopes from the Green Bay Packers. They each contained two face masks with Packers logos (two per each Green and Gold package). As stated in the enclosed note, much has yet to be decided on just how a season would take place.

Season Tickets — Whether They Play or Not

Today, 2020 Packers season ticket payments are due. If the NFL actually has a season, for COVID-19 reasons I would not be able to be in a stadium full of people. I am very disappointed, but many people have much worse problems. Stay strong. Be kind.
