Packers name Jeff Hafley defensive coordinator

Hafley comes to the Packers after working as the head coach for Boston College for the past four seasons

Jan 31, 2024 at 07:00 PM

The Green Bay Packers have named Jeff Hafley defensive coordinator. Head Coach Matt LaFleur made the announcement Wednesday.

“We are excited to welcome Jeff, his wife, Gina, and their daughters, Hope and Leah, to the Packers and the Green Bay community,” added LaFleur. “Jeff has had success at every stop of his coaching career with an impressive track record of developing players at every level. We look forward to him leading our defense”

Hafley comes to the Packers after working as the head coach for Boston College for the past four seasons (2020-23), where he led the Eagles to bowl eligibility in three of his four years. In 2021, the defense ranked No. 3 nationally in passing yards allowed (173.5 per game) and also were top-30 nationally in total defense, red-zone defense, first downs allowed, third-down percentage, team passing efficiency and defensive touchdowns. The Eagles also led the ACC in fewest penalties and fewest penalty yards.

Prior to his time at BC, Hafley was the co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach for Ohio State in 2019. In his one season in Columbus, he was a finalist for the Frank Broyles Award and the 247 Sports Defensive Coordinator of the Year. Hafley helped the Buckeye defense rank No. 1 nationally in yards per play, No. 2 in total defense and passing yards allowed, No. 3 in scoring defense and sacks, No. 7 in rushing defense and No. 1 in red-zone defense. The Buckeyes registered 15 interceptions in 2019, tied for No. 9 in the nation, while allowing just 25 pass plays of 20-plus yards.

Before his time at Ohio State, Hafley spent seven seasons as an NFL assistant coach. The Montvale, N.J., native worked as a defensive backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers (2016-18) and Cleveland Browns (2014-15). In 2018, the 49ers ranked No. 11 in the NFL in passing defense and were No. 14 in 2016 after ranking No. 27 the year before Hafley arrived. He first coached in the NFL as an assistant defensive backs coach for Tampa Bay in 2012 and then was the secondary/safeties coach for the Buccaneers in 2013.

Prior to his move to the NFL, Hafley spent 11 seasons as a college coach. After starting his career as the running backs coach at Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnic Institute, he moved on to the University of Albany for four seasons as a defensive assistant and defensive backs coach (2002-05). Hafley then coached at Pittsburgh for five seasons (2006-10), where he worked with future Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis, who was a Jim Thorpe Award finalist in 2006. Hafley was a defensive assistant/cornerbacks coach in 2006-07 and was secondary coach from 2008-10. He spent one season (2011) as the defensive backs coach at Rutgers, helping the Scarlet Knights rank No. 9 nationally in passing defense. Hafley helped develop future NFL standout defensive backs Duron Harmon and Logan Ryan during his time at Rutgers.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers had plenty of success going up against the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs when Aaron Rodgers was running the show. The Niners knocked Rodgers and the Packers out of the playoffs four times, including twice in the previous four seasons.

While first-year starter Jordan Love lacks the pedigree of the four-time MVP, his performance in the last half of the season has caught the attention of the 49ers (12-5) headed into their divisional round game against the Packers (10-8) on Saturday night. “He’s really good at going through his reads and playing the offense to a T,” defensive end Nick Bosa said.

After a shaky start to his first season as a starter, Love has been playing at a high level the past two months. He has thrown 21 touchdown passes with only one interception the past nine games and is coming off one of the best playoff debuts ever. Love went 16 for 21 for 272 yards, three TDs and no interceptions in a 48-32 win over Dallas on Sunday.

“I thought he played a really, really good football game,” coach Matt LaFleur said. “It’s never going to be perfect. There’s going to be little details here and there, whether it’s hanging in the pocket, some decisions, but I’ll tell you what, the guy made some massive plays in that game that kind of go off script, so to speak, and to me that’s where you see so much value in him.”

With Love playing as well as he has and a group of young pass-catchers emerging as big threats, the Packers once again look like a top offensive team after taking a step back in Rodgers’ last season in Green Bay in 2022.

The Niners see a similar look to those high-powered offenses they faced early in LaFleur’s tenure but see more of the coach’s influence on the scheme now that he has a young quarterback he can mold.

“They have a lot of the same guys from the past really good teams they have had and a quarterback who does exactly what he’s coached to do,” Bosa said. “Aaron Rodgers is a Hall of Famer and unbelievable, but he kind of went outside of the realm of coaching and sometimes it’s good when you have a guy who does what he’s coached to do.”

CLIMB THE MOUNTAIN

After losing in the NFC title game the past two seasons, the 49ers came into 2023 looking to get over that hump and back to the Super Bowl. But first they had to get through the regular season, which they did with 12 wins and a first-round bye.

Now the focus can really turn to getting rid of the bad taste from those season-ending losses.

“We’re excited,” All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams said. “This is what you wait all year for, especially after the way last year ended. The regular season is fun and it has its own challenges. But when you get that close, like we did last year, you just want to fast forward to the regular season and get back to this tournament.”

SURGING JONES

Green Bay’s Aaron Jones has rushed for more than 110 yards in each of his past four games. He ran for 118 yards and three touchdowns in the Packers’ victory over the Cowboys.

It’s worth noting that Jones has rushed for more than 100 yards every time he’s faced the Cowboys in his career. Jones has never rushed for 100 yards in six previous meetings with San Francisco, though he had nine catches for 129 yards as well as 12 carries for 41 yards in the Packers’ 2021 divisional playoff loss to the 49ers.

RECEIVING DEPTH

Love has thrown 21 touchdown passes with only one interception over his past nine games, and it seems as if a different receiver emerges as his favorite target each week.

The Packers have produced a different 100-yard receiver in each of their past three games. Romeo Doubs had six catches for 151 yards against the Cowboys. Jayden Reed didn’t catch a single pass against Dallas, but he had four receptions for 112 yards when the Packers closed the regular season with a 17-9 victory over the Chicago Bears. One week earlier, Bo Melton caught six passes for 105 yards in a 33-10 triumph at Minnesota.

“You never really know who’s going to have the big game for us in the receiver room,” Love said. “You have plays dialed up for some guys, and other times it’s just kind of the looks we get defensively, who might be catching the ball. But I think the mindset, they all want the ball, they all expect the ball on every play, and that’s what’s helping them be successful.”

JUST FOR KICKS

Both teams come into the game with rookie kickers in a bit of a rut. Third-round pick Jake Moody missed his first extra point of the season and a 38-yard field goal in San Francisco’s Week 18 loss to the Rams. Sixth-round pick Anders Carlson has missed an extra-point attempt in three of the Packers’ past four games. He also missed a 41-yard field goal against Chicago and is just 7 of 13 this season on field-goal attempts of at least 40 yards.

“A lot of young (players) — especially kickers — go through some trials and tribulations, unfortunately,” LaFleur said. “And the one thing that’s been so great that you cannot coach is just the resiliency he’s shown, because every time he misses one, he comes back and he’s made them.”

PACKERS PLAYER TO WATCH

QB Jordan Love has thrown 21 TD passes with only one INT over his past nine games. Love also has completed 70.7% of his passes for 2,422 yards during that stretch. The only other quarterbacks to complete at least 70% of their passes while throwing for at least 2,400 yards and 21 touchdowns with no more than one interception over a nine-game stretch are Matt Ryan (2016-17) and Drew Brees (2018).

49ERS PLAYER TO WATCH

RB Christian McCaffrey. After missing the regular-season finale with a calf injury, McCaffrey will be back this week. He led the NFL in rushing (1,459 yards), was tied for the most TDs (21) and had the most first downs (114). McCaffrey was the first player since Emmitt Smith in 1995 to lead the league in rushing after every week of the season.

KEY MATCHUP

Packers offensive tackles vs. Niners DE Nick Bosa. Green Bay silenced Micah Parsons last week, allowing one pressure on 19 pass rush snaps, according to NFL NextGen stats. RT Zach Tom gave up none on nine rushes to Parsons. Bosa was third in the NFL with 95 pressures in the regular season, according to Pro Football Focus.

KEY INJURIES

Packers RB AJ Dillon (thumb/neck) has missed Green Bay’s past two games… Packers OLB Kingsley Enagbare got knocked out of the Cowboys game with a knee injury… Green Bay CB Jaire Alexander left last week’s game with an ankle issue and didn’t practice Wednesday… The 49ers will be without DE Clelin Ferrell (knee), but should get DT Arik Armstead (foot, knee) back this week.

SERIES NOTES

This will be the record-setting 10th playoff meeting between the franchises… Green Bay won four of the first five playoff games in the series but lost the past four, including the 2019 NFC title game and 2021 divisional round under these coaching staffs… The Packers are 3-2 at Levi’s Stadium.

STATS AND STUFF

The Packers have reached the divisional round of the playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons under coach Matt LaFleur despite not having any Pro Bowl selections this season. Keisean Nixon was an All-Pro pick as a kick returner… The Packers’ victory over the Cowboys enabled them to tie the New England Patriots for most postseason wins (37) in league history. The 49ers rank just behind them with 36 playoff wins… The Packers have an NFL-leading 13 playoff road wins in franchise history. They were the only road team to win in the wild-card round, as they ended Dallas’ 16-game home win streak… The Packers struggled to a 2-5 start that included a four-game skid, but they’ve gone 8-3 since… Packers RB Aaron Jones has rushed for at least 111 yards in four straight games. He rushed for 118 yards and three TDs against the Cowboys. No Green Bay player has ever had five straight games with at least 100 yards rushing… Packers WR Dontayvion Wicks has four touchdown catches this season, all in his past three games… WR Jayden Reed didn’t catch a pass against Dallas but had 64 catches for 793 yards and 10 total touchdowns (eight receiving, two rushing) in the regular season to lead the Packers in all three categories… The Packers didn’t allow a sack against the Cowboys and have given up just two sacks during their four-game winning streak… Packers OLB Lukas Van Ness has had a sack in back-to-back games… The Packers had three players with at least 7½ sacks in the regular season: Rashan Gary (9), Preston Smith (8) and Kenny Clark (7½). Smith got another sack in the Cowboys game… Packers K Anders Carlson had his sixth missed extra-point attempt in the Cowboys game. Carlson also is just 7 of 13 on field-goal attempts from at least 40 yards… San Francisco won the NFC West for a second straight season and earned a first-round bye… The Niners have made it to the NFC championship game in three of the past four seasons. San Francisco lost the past two years and lost in the Super Bowl in the 2019 season… The 49ers are 4-0 in the playoffs at home under coach Kyle Shanahan and haven’t lost a home playoff game since the 2011 NFC title game against the New York Giants… The Niners became the sixth team with four players with at least 1,000 yards from scrimmage: McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle… San Francisco led the NFL by averaging 6.6 yards per play in the regular season… The Niners scored 76 points on the opening drive this season, the most in the NFL since at least 2000… San Francisco QB Brock Purdy led the NFL with 45 completions of at least 25 yards. Packers at Cowboys — Wild Card Preview

Packers QB Jordan Love makes his playoff debut at the Cowboys, who have a 16-game home win streak

DAY / TIME / TV: Sunday, 4:30 p.m. EST, FOX
SERIES RECORD: Packers lead 21-17.
LAST MEETING: Packers beat Cowboys 31-28 on Nov. 13, 2022, at Green Bay.
LAST WEEK: Packers beat Bears 17-9; Cowboys beat Commanders 38-10.

COWBOYS OFFENSE: OVERALL (5), RUSH (14), PASS (3), SCORING (1).

TURNOVER DIFFERENTIAL: Packers even; Cowboys plus-10.

Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys couldn’t have asked for things to go any better than they did the last two weeks of the regular season.

Their rise to the No. 2 seed in the NFC means they won’t have to leave home in the postseason unless they get where they’ve wanted to be for 28 years without making it — the conference championship game.

The possibility of at least two playoff games at AT&T Stadium comes with the Cowboys (12-5) riding a 16-game winning streak under their retractable roof.

All fine and good, Prescott says, but first things first.

The NFC East champs will see the playoff debut of Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love, future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers’ successor, when the Packers (9-8) visit in a wild-card game Sunday.

“On our end, it starts off with us taking care of this one,” Prescott said. “We can talk about the opportunity, this and that, but the opportunity is right now with this game. I’d be getting ahead of myself if I didn’t say it’s today and the rest of these meetings and our approach.”

Dallas is in the playoffs for the third consecutive season, which the franchise hasn’t done since a run of six straight from 1991-96 that included three of its five Super Bowl titles.

The Cowboys were knocked out by San Francisco each of the past two postseasons, first in a wild-card game at home, then the divisional round on the road.

“Experience is everything,” said Dallas receiver CeeDee Lamb, who set club records with an NFL-best 135 catches for 1,749 yards. “I feel like we have a lot of guys that have also been on the team for quite some time and we all went through the same scars and we’re not trying to feel that again.”

This time, Dallas wouldn’t see the top-seeded Niners until the NFC title game. The Cowboys chased defending division champion Philadelphia for two months before overtaking the Eagles in the final two weeks.

Instead of a postseason likely filled with road games like a year ago, when Dallas dominated Tampa Bay before the loss in the Bay Area, the Cowboys are in line for multiple home playoff games for the first time since they were the NFC’s top seed in Prescott’s rookie year in 2016.

Prescott lost his playoff debut to Rodgers and coach Mike McCarthy’s Packers. McCarthy is now in his fourth season in charge of the Cowboys.

“It’s all about an excellent opportunity that we prepared ourselves and we put ourselves in this position,” said McCarthy, who led Green Bay to a Super Bowl title 13 years ago and spent 12-plus seasons there. “We earned it, deserved it and more importantly, we’re going to take advantage of it.”

Love threw 18 touchdown passes with just one interception in the final eight games, when the Packers went 6-2 to surge into the final playoff spot in the NFC.

“We’ve had to win every game going forward to be able to put ourselves in this position,” Love said. “Obviously now the stakes are a little bit higher in the playoffs, but I think we’ve been here, we have the right mindset going forward.”

SIZZLING QBs

Prescott threw an NFL-leading 36 touchdown passes during the regular season, while Love was second with 32.

It’s the second wild-card meeting of league leaders from the regular season. The other matched a pair of Hall of Famers when Dan Fouts and San Diego topped Terry Bradshaw and Pittsburgh 31-28 in 1982.

Love will try to continue the mastery Rodgers had over the Cowboys. The Packers have won nine of the past 10 meetings, including divisional playoff games during the 2014 and 2016 seasons.

KEEPING UP WITH JONES

Green Bay running back Aaron Jones missed six games this season due to hamstring and knee issues, and his 656 yards rushing represent his lowest total since his rookie season of 2017.

But he’s healthy and playing well just in time for the postseason. Jones rushed for at least 111 yards in each of the Packers’ last three games, all wins.

Jones has a history of playing well against the Cowboys. He has rushed for 370 yards and six touchdowns in three previous matchups with Dallas. His six TD runs are the most by any player against Dallas since 2017.

“When he’s on the field, you better know where he is,” McCarthy said.

SHOWDOWN SHORT-CIRCUITED?

This matchup looked to be a showcase with Lamb being covered by Green Bay cornerback Jaire Alexander, who has had an up-and-down year with injuries and a one-game suspension issued by the team for crashing the coin toss at Carolina and almost botching Green Bay’s plan for possession.

Now Alexander’s status is up in the air after he sprained an ankle in practice Thursday. He had back and shoulder issues earlier this season.

WHITHER WATSON?

Green Bay receiver Christian Watson had three touchdown catches against Dallas to spoil McCarthy’s Green Bay homecoming last season when the Packers overcame a two-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter of a 31-28 overtime win.

Watson’s availability is uncertain after he missed the final five games of the season with a hamstring injury. The 2022 second-round pick from North Dakota State was limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday.

“I’m doing everything I possibly can to be able to go on Sunday,” said Watson, who played nine games this season.

PACKERS PLAYER TO WATCH

QB Jordan Love is one of the hottest quarterbacks in the league as the fourth-year pro prepares for his playoff debut. Love has thrown 18 touchdown passes with one interception over his past eight games, and the Packers have gone 6-2 during that stretch.

COWBOYS PLAYER TO WATCH

LB Micah Parsons has made the playoffs all three of his seasons with Dallas. He's looking for his first dominant showing in his fourth game. Parsons' only sack so far came against Tom Brady in Parsons' only playoff victory, at Tampa Bay last season.

KEY MATCHUP

Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb vs. Packers CB Jaire Alexander, although Alexander's status is iffy after spraining an ankle in practice Thursday. Lamb had a breakout season, setting Dallas records for catches (NFL-best 135) and yards receiving (1,749, second to Miami's Tyreek Hill). Lamb had 13 catches in each of the past two regular-season games and could become the first player in NFL history with at least that many in three consecutive games. Alexander had a mostly lost season coming off a career-best five interceptions that followed signing an $84 million contract extension in May 2022. After back and shoulder injuries sidelined him roughly half the season, Alexander was suspended a game for crashing the coin toss in his hometown of Charlotte and almost costing the Packers possession to start both halves.

KEY INJURIES

Packers WR Christian Watson (hamstring) has missed five straight games… RB AJ Dillon (thumb/neck) and LB Isaiah McDuffie (concussion/neck) also didn’t play in the regular-season finale… WR Romeo Doubs (chest) left the Bears game and was taken to the hospital, though he was released later that night… Cowboys CB Stephon Gilmore expects to play after getting knocked out of the Washington game with a shoulder injury… LG Tyler Smith sat against the Commanders with a plantar fascia injury but is hopeful he will play… RG Zack Martin is expected to return after being a late scratch in Washington with an illness.

SERIES NOTES

The Packers have beaten the Cowboys four straight times and have won nine of the past 10 matchups. All of those came during QB Aaron Rodgers’ Green Bay tenure. That includes divisional playoff victories during the 2014 and 2016 seasons. This is the first time the Cowboys and Packers have faced off in the wild-card round. Packers WR Christian Watson had three touchdowns and Lamb scored twice when the Packers rallied from a two-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Cowboys in overtime last season. That was Dallas coach Mike McCarthy's return to Green Bay, where he coached for 12-plus seasons and won a Super Bowl.

STATS AND STUFF

The Cowboys have won 16 consecutive regular-season games at AT&T Stadium. It's the club's longest home winning streak since an 18-game run in the regular season at Texas Stadium from 1979-81. The Cowboys went 2-1 at Texas Stadium in the playoffs during those three seasons. This is the first home playoff game since Dallas started its AT&T Stadium streak… McCarthy has a chance to become the first coach to win a playoff game against a team he led to a Super Bowl title… Dallas’ Dak Prescott had an NFL-leading 36 touchdown passes this season. Love ranked second with 32… The Packers reached the playoffs despite not having any players selected to the Pro Bowl. Six were selected as alternates. Dallas has seven Pro Bowlers… The Packers have the NFL’s youngest roster this season. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the Packers have the youngest weighted age of any playoff team since the 1974 Buffalo Bills… Packers RB Aaron Jones has rushed for 370 yards and six TDs in three previous games against the Cowboys. He has run for at least 100 yards in all of them… The Packers earned a wild-card berth by winning their last three games… The Packers, Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers have 36 playoff wins each, putting them in a tie for second place. New England has 37… The Packers’ .590 postseason winning percentage ranks third in the league, behind New England (.627) and San Francisco (.610)… Love threw for 4,159 yards in the regular season. He joined Kurt Warner (1999) and Patrick Mahomes (2018) as the only NFL players to have 4,000-plus passing yards and 32-plus TD passes in their first season with multiple starts… This is the first time in Packers history that four rookies have caught at least 30 passes. They were Jayden Reed (64), Dontayvion Wicks (39), Luke Musgrave (34) and Tucker Kraft (31)… Lamb has seven games with at least 10 catches this season. An eighth would put him one behind New Orleans' Michael Thomas (nine in 2019) for the most games with at least 10 catches in a season, playoffs included… CB DaRon Bland had an NFL-leading nine interceptions. The second-year player set a record with five interception returns for touchdowns. All of those came in the first 11 games… CB Stephon Gilmore has 11 pass breakups in his postseason career. That's second to San Francisco's Charvarius Ward (12) among active players… K Brandon Aubrey led the NFL with 36 field goals. The 28-year-old rookie set at NFL record by going 35 of 35 to start his career. Aubrey is the first Dallas kicker to lead the league in field goals since Richie Cunningham in 1997.
