The list of Semifinalists, which also was announced live today on NFL Network, was reduced from an initial group of 130 nominees announced in September. The next step in the Selection Process comes when the Semifinalists are trimmed to 15 Modern-Era Finalists. That list increases to 18 Finalists with the inclusion of the recommended nominees of the Hall of Fame’s Coach, Contributor and Senior Committees: Tom Flores, Bill Nunn and Drew Pearson, respectively.
The Class of 2021 will be determined and announced during the week leading up to Super Bowl LV in Tampa, Fla. While there is no set number for any class of enshrinees, the Bylaws for the Selection Committee provide that between four and eight new members will be selected.
The Coach Finalist, Contributor Finalist and Senior Finalist are voted “yes” or “no” for election at the annual selection meeting and must receive at least 80% support from the Committee to be elected. The Modern-Era Finalists will be trimmed during the meeting from 15 to 10, then from 10 to five. The remaining five finalists will be voted on individually, “yes” or “no,” and must receive the same 80% positive vote as the Coach, Contributor and Senior Finalists to earn election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2021 will be enshrined Sunday, Aug. 8, 2021 in Canton as part of the 2021 Enshrinement Week Powered by Johnson Controls. Other events during the week of festivities will include the rescheduled Hall of Fame Game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys on Aug. 5, the Gold Jacket Dinner on Aug. 6 and the Centennial Class of 2020 Enshrinement on Aug. 7. Not the No. 12 We Know Now...
If you were of a certain age in the 1990’s, this photo of a certain Packers QB should elicit groans. No, that is not Aaron Rodgers, who was only 11 at the time.
Give up? QB T.J. Rubely. And why older Packers fans groan when they hear his name:
“His most infamous NFL moment, leading to the end of his career, came as a Green Bay Packer in a 1995 game against the Minnesota Vikings. Both starting quarterback Brett Favre and back-up quarterback Ty Detmer got injured in the game, but the Packers and Vikings were tied 24–24 with less than a minute to go and the Packers with the ball on the Minnesota 38-yard line.“
“On 3rd-and-1, coach Mike Holmgren called for a quarterback sneak. However, Rubley, the only remaining quarterback for the Packers, audibled and called a roll-out. He passed the ball and it was quickly intercepted, giving Minnesota the ball and eventually, the win.“
Rubley was cut later that week and never played in another NFL game.

1991 NFL Draft • Brett Favre Analysis

As our long-time readers know, we will from time to time post interesting things that we've seen in online auctions. This item, from a 2016 Heritage Auctions event, definitely fits the “we need to share this” criteria. It is a binder from the Atlanta Falcons’ scouting department, prepared for the 1991 NFL Draft. While only a part of the binder’s contents are pictured, the analysis of Southern Mississippi QB Brett Favre that we do see is quite interesting indeed. Let’s let the auction description take it from here:
“1991 Atlanta Falcons Draft Picks Scouting Reports, Combine Photographs, Etc. - With Historically Significant Brett Favre Documents!
“It seemed like Brett Favre's career was doomed before it began, when in 1991 the Atlanta Falcons went against head coach Jerry Glanville’s wishes and drafted the Southern Mississippi standout 33rd overall. Glanville spoke about the pick as only the fiery Perrysburg, Ohio native could, saying it would take a plane crash for him to put Favre into the game. Glanville looked pretty smart after Favre finally did get in the game, throwing his first NFL regular season pass that resulted in an interception returned for a touchdown. Favre only attempted four passes in his Falcons career, but nevertheless, this was the where it all started for the 2016 Hall of Fame inductee, who will go down as one of the best quarterbacks ever to take the field.”
“Presented here is one of the most historically significant lots representing the Ol’ Gunslinger and three-time league MVP. It is the original Atlanta Falcons scouting report for the team’s entire ’91 NFL Draft, presented in its original binder (some separation at the binding, but still intact). Never-before-seen original NFL Combine 8”x10” photographs are included for each player, in addition to handwritten and photo copies of scouting reports and other intriguing documents. The Brett Favre section includes 16 original pages in all, while several scouts and coaches described him as: “A player that makes it happen,” “Is tough and can zip it in,” “Rushes a lot of throws” and much more. Brett’s auto accident before his senior year in college is also a heavy topic in the reports: “Several origins bruises, had 30 inches of dead intestines removed.”
“A must-have for the advanced Favre collector or NFL historian — or the Pro Football Hall of Fame, for that matter.”

Joe Theismann Interviews Brett Favre

Here’s a piece from the Packerville, U.S.A. archives — an interview with QB Brett Favre, conducted by former pro QB Joe Theismann (who some of you may know better from his television work). This NFL preview publication was on newsstands (remember those?) back in the summer of 1996, and at the bottom of the post is Theismann’s predictions for the that season. We think you’ll notice that he was a bit off.

There’s a Lot of Reading to be Done..

We stopped at the local Barnes & Noble here in Green Bay to pick up the book you see above, “The Big 50 — The Men and Moments That Made the Green Bay Packers.” But what we didn’t know that the book you see below is also available. Both are 2019 publications.

This one — “Ron Wolf and the Green Bay Packers” — should be interesting, if it offers some behind-the-scenes anecdotes that we haven’t heard previously.

This book — “Strength In Numbers” — is also currently available, but we have not added it to the archives yet.
There are some more books coming this fall, including the Packers’ “official” 100th anniversary book by team historian Cliff Christl (not pictured). The others are:

1996: Joe Theismann Preview

Here’s a recent acquisition to the Packerville, U.S.A. archives, taking us back to the summer of 1996, when the rejuvenated Green Bay Packers were looking to end their 29-year championship drought. Many experts predicted that they would win it all that year — but did this particular publication? Well, read it and see...

From The Archives: Farewell Friend

A recent addition to the archives is today’s feature. Many special “Brett Favre Retirement” publications were published in the Spring of 2008. Everyone wanted to commemorate the historic career of the Green Bay Packers’ quarterback who returned the franchise from the dead, beginning in 1992. Fans accepted that an era was over. That is, until that summer...
