“Three-Peat”? Don’t Forget Bart Starr

The “Three-Peat” issue is dead for a while after the Kansas City Chiefs were not able to even compete for the chance to do so in Super Bowl LIX. By the next time a team is approaching such a scenario, Bart Starr may be even more forgotten. Kudos to FOX for making the point for recognixing the 1929, 1930, 1931 and 1965, 1966, 1967 Green Bay Packers near the end of the Super Bowl broadcast. The case for not forgetting Bart Starr and those teams is HERE.

Sterling Sharpe to Be Enshrined

NFL Hall of Fame: Sterling Sharpe, Antonio Gates, Jared Allen, and Eric Allen are 4 members of 2025 class

Frank Schwab  |  Yahoo! Senior writer

NEW ORLEANS — San Diego Chargers fans have a reason to celebrate again.

The Chargers moved to Los Angeles after the 2016 season, leaving their San Diego fans with heartache and old memories. Many of those memories include tight end Antonio Gates, who was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his second time on the ballot. He was part of the 2025 class, which was announced Thursday at NFL Honors.

The rest of the class includes defensive end Jared Allen, cornerback Eric Allen, and receiver Sterling Sharpe. Among the notable names who did not get in were New York Giants Super Bowl-winning quarterback Eli Manning, whose Hall of Fame case is complicated in its own right, and New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri.

With Sharpe's induction, he and former Broncos and Ravens tight end Shannon Sharpe become the first pair of brothers — not the Mannings, like some expected — ever enshrined in Canton.

Gates played 14 of his 16 seasons in San Diego and his final two in Los Angeles, picking up 11,841 yards and 116 touchdowns. He was an eight-time Pro Bowler, three-time first-team All-Pro and a member of the All-Decade Team of the 2000s. Gates' Hall of Fame story is incredible when considering the often-told tale that he did not play college football. He played basketball at Eastern Michigan for a year and then two seasons at Kent State. In his final basketball season he averaged 20.6 points per game. That athleticism translated well to the NFL.

"It's the best feeling in the world," Gates said after the announcement. "There's no way to describe this feeling. You just life in the moment and have gratitude."

Jared Allen was one of the premier pass rushers of his era, leading the NFL in sacks twice including a 22-sack season in 2011. Allen had 136 career sacks with four teams (Chiefs, Vikings, Bears, Panthers).

Eric Allen was a six-time Pro Bowler with 54 career interceptions over 14 years with the Eagles, Raiders and Saints.

Sharpe's career was cut short due to a neck injury but led the NFL in receptions three times in seven seasons. He had 8,134 yards and 65 touchdowns in those seven seasons, all with the Packers. He joins his brother Shannon Sharpe in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Sharpe had a longer wait than the others in this class — he retired after the 1994 season — but said a few times that he hadn't been worried about whether he'd make the Hall of Fame because he wasn't expecting it and he was satisfied with what he did in his career.

"I can say if I never would have had this opportunity I would have been OK," Sharpe said. "I did what I wanted to do. I played for seven years and that's all I could have asked for."

From the NFL:

Sterling Sharpe

The lone finalist from the Seniors, Coach and Contributor categories to make the Hall in 2025, Sharpe knows a thing or two about maximizing his opportunities. An NFL pro for just seven seasons, the three-time first-team All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver still enters Canton as a highly decorated player. Sharpe led the league in receptions three times in his seven seasons, all with the Packers, including his historic 1992 campaign, during which he paced all pass catchers in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns. One of Brett Favre's favorite targets in Green Bay, Sharpe would have had an even more prolific career if not for a neck injury discovered after the 1994 season, his last in the NFL. Sharpe went out with a bang, catching a league-high 18 TDs in '94, but he just missed out on a Super Bowl title, which the Packers claimed without him during the 1996 campaign. After retiring as a member of the Green and Gold, Sharpe is now the the second member of his family to earn a gold jacket; his brother, Shannon, a champion tight end for Denver and Baltimore, was inducted in 2011. Sterling's election is therefore a historic one, as he and Shannon are the first pair of brothers to be enshrined in the Pro Football Football of Fame. Football is family, forever.

The Packers Say “Thank You”

As they normally do when the season winds up in a loss (either at the end of the regular season or in the playoffs, like last Sunday), the Green Bay Packers take out full-page ads in the Green Bay and Milwaukee newspapers to thank the fans for their support. These were placed in this weekend’s papers.

And now the offseason is upon us. Look at it this way — the Lions are an obstacle for us, and now we’ve had one more week than them to prepare for the 2025 season.

2024 Week 18 — Bears at Packers

Packers look to finish regular season by beating the Bears for 12th straight time

The Associated Press

Chicago (4-12) at Green Bay (11-5)

Day/Time/TV: Sunday, 12:00 p.m. CST, Fox
Series record: Packers lead 108-95-6
Last meeting: Packers won 20-19 in Chicago on Nov. 17, 2024
Last week: Bears lost 6-3 at home to Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 26. Packers lost 27-25 at Minnesota on Sunday.
Bears offense: overall (32), rush (25), pass (29), scoring (29)
Packers offense: overall (7), rush (5), pass (12), scoring (8)
Bears defense: overall (25), rush (27), pass (18), scoring (12)
Packers defense: overall (8), rush (6), pass (17), scoring (6)
Turnover differential: Bears plus-8, Packers plus-12

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Gaining momentum matters more to the Green Bay Packers than improving their playoff seeding as they gear up for the postseason against their longtime punching bag, the slumping Chicago Bears.

Green Bay (11-5) is currently positioned as the No. 7 seed in the NFC, which would result in a trip to Philadelphia for the wild-card round. The Packers could earn the sixth seed if they beat the Bears (4-12) on Sunday and the Washington Commanders lose at Dallas. “I think for us the mindset really is it doesn’t matter,” quarterback Jordan Love said. “I think we’re going into this knowing that we’re obviously going to be on the road and go play some teams we’ve already played before. We’re excited obviously for the playoffs to start.”

Packers coach Matt LaFleur said he intends to treat this game like any other and will play his starters. Tight end Tucker Kraft believes an impressive outing on Sunday could serve as a “springboard” into the playoffs. The Packers are trying to bounce back from a sloppy 27-25 loss at Minnesota last weekend. “I want to see juice,” Kraft said. “I want to see us out there right away getting the ball to our back (Josh Jacobs), letting him just be him. And then getting some flavor going in the next couple of drives and just execute.”

The Packers are 1-5 against NFC teams that have clinched playoff berths, but they’re 10-0 against everyone else. That includes a 20-19 victory at Chicago on Nov. 17 that gave the Packers 11 straight wins over the Bears, the longest active winning streak by an NFL team over an opponent. Chicago began the season 4-2 but has lost 10 straight since. Quarterback Caleb Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, says he has taken notes throughout his rookie season on areas where he must improve. “Things are going to take time,” Williams said. “I’m well aware of that and OK with that. But I am definitely going to try to push myself to exhaustion mentally and physically this offseason to be able to withstand the long season.”

Jacobs’ touchdown streak

Jacobs has run for a touchdown in seven straight games to match Paul Hornung in 1960 for the longest such streak in Packers history. Jacobs enters the weekend ranked fifth in the NFL with 1,285 yards rushing. He earned his third Pro Bowl selection this week.

Lopsided rivalry

Green Bay’s 11 straight victories over Chicago represent the longest winning streak by either team in the history of this rivalry, which has been played more than any other NFL matchup. The Packers’ only longer winning streak over an opponent was 15 straight over the Chicago Cardinals from 1937-46. Green Bay kept the streak alive back in November when Karl Brooks blocked Cairo Santos’ 46-yard field goal attempt as time expired.

Bears’ collapse

The Bears had big hopes coming into the season. Instead, it fell apart. They fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron after nine games and let a head coach go during a season for the first time in franchise history when they gave Matt Eberflus the boot after a Thanksgiving Day loss at Detroit. But the losses continue to pile up. They’re 0-4 under interim coach Thomas Brown. They’ve never lost more than 10 straight in one season. “I think just overall there has to be more accountability, I think, up close and personal and more so just talking to guys and pulling them aside,” cornerback Jaylon Johnson said. “I think it’s one thing to say something when everyone is saying something. But I think if you can pull a guy to the side, maybe, and have a personal conversation and try to really get them to understand the magnitude of what’s going on and how much we need him, I think that can do something better.”

Love avoiding interceptions

Love threw his 11th interception of the season when Chicago’s Terell Smith picked off a pass at the goal line in that Nov. 17 game. He hasn’t thrown a pick since. After getting picked off 11 times in his first eight starts this season, Love has thrown nine touchdown passes without an interception over his last six games.

On the line

Williams defended Chicago’s offensive line, calling it a “stupid idea” that his soaring sack total is all on his blockers. “The connotation behind my offensive line has been annoying and frustrating because they work their tail off to be able to go out there,” he said. has been sacked 67 times, the fourth-highest single-season total in league history. David Carr has the record with 76 as a rookie with Houston in 2002. Philadelphia’s Randall Cunningham took 72 sacks in 1986, and Carr was sacked 68 times in 2005.

Bears player to watch

QB Caleb Williams. The Bears are opting to give the No. 1 overall draft pick one more start, believing the benefits outweigh the injury risks. Williams’ franchise-record 67 sacks lead the NFL and is the fourth-highest total in league history. David Carr has the highest single-season total with 76 as a rookie with Houston in 2002. Williams has started every game and thrown for 3,393 yards — fifth on Chicago’s single-season list — with 19 touchdowns and six interceptions. His league rookie-record streak of passes without an INT ended at 353 when he got picked off by Riq Woolen near the end of last week’s game.

Packers player to watch

LB Edgerrin Cooper, a second-round pick from Texas A&M, continued his rookie season by getting his heaviest workload yet and responding with four tackles for loss against the Vikings. This regular-season finale gives Cooper a chance to build on his momentum as he tunes up for his first playoff game.

Key matchup

Bears running game vs. Packers run defense. The Packers allowed a season-high 179 yards rushing in their victory over the Bears at Soldier Field. D’Andre Swift rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and Williams ran for 70 yards on nine attempts that day. The Bears have struggled ever since and now have a banged-up offensive line, but Chicago’s rushing success in that previous matchup gives the Packers reason for concern.

Key injuries

Bears LG Teven Jenkins (calf), who missed last week’s game, would not have participated Wednesday had the team practiced rather than held a walkthrough. The same goes for LT Larry Borom and WR Rome Odunze, who were ill… Packers CB Jaire Alexander (knee) has missed six straight games… Packers LB Quay Walker (ankle) has missed two straight games… Packers WR Christian Watson (knee) didn’t play at Minnesota… Packers DL Devonte Wyatt and S Zayne Anderson left the Vikings game with concussions.

Series notes

Green Bay has won its past 11 matchups with the Bears, which represents the longest winning streak by either team in the history of the NFL’s most-played rivalry. This is also the longest active winning streak by any NFL team against a specific opponent. The Packers’ only longer winning streak over any opponent in history came from 1937-46, when they beat the Chicago Cardinals 15 straight times… Chicago nearly ended the streak earlier this season. The Packers escaped with a 20-19 victory only after Karl Brooks blocked Cairo Santos’ 46-yard field goal on the game’s final play. Jordan Love’s 1-yard touchdown run put the Packers ahead for good with 2:59 left… The Bears have scored over 20 points in just two of their past 11 meetings with the Packers…  During its 11-game winning streak over the Bears, Green Bay has a plus-15 turnover margin with 19 takeaways and four giveaways… The Packers have outscored Chicago 450-244 in their past 16 home games against the Bears.

Stats and stuff

Chicago has lost 10 straight — its second double-digit skid in three seasons under GM Ryan Poles. The Bears dropped the final 10 games in 2022 as part of a franchise-worst 14-game streak. They have never lost more than 10 in a row in one season… The Bears’ 67 sacks allowed surpassed their previous mark of 66 in 2004, when they used four quarterbacks… Chicago’s defense did its part last week, allowing a season-low six in points and its second-lowest total in yards (265)…  Odunze’s 716 yards receiving are the fourth most by a Bears rookie…  Bears P Tory Taylor’s 48.1-yard gross punting average is the highest in franchise history, and his 32 punts downed inside the 20 are a Bears record… Santos has made seven field goals of 50 yards or more, tying his franchise record from last season… Green Bay is currently slotted as the No. 7 seed in the NFC playoffs, which would have the Packers visiting the NFC East champion Philadelphia Eagles in the wild-card round. The Packers can move up to the No. 6 seed if they beat the Bears and the Washington Commanders lose at Dallas… The start of the Packers’ 11-game winning streak over Chicago coincides with Matt LaFleur’s arrival as Green Bay’s coach. The only other coaches ever to be undefeated against a particular team through at least 10 games (including the playoffs) are Joe Gibbs (12-0 vs. Detroit), George Allen (11-0-1 vs. Atlanta), Blanton Collier (11-0 vs. Washington) and Curly Lambeau (10-0 vs. Cleveland Tigers, 9-0-1 vs. Milwaukee Badgers)…  The Packers have trailed at halftime in all their NFC North games, and they have been outscored 85-27 in the first half of their divisional games. They’ve outscored all other opponents 192-89 in the first half… The Packers are the only NFL team with four players who have at least 25 receptions, 600 yards receiving and multiple touchdown catches (Romeo Doubs, Tucker Kraft, Jayden Reed and Watson)… Packers S Xavier McKinney has seven interceptions to rank second in the NFL, two behind Detroit’s Kerby Joseph… Packers RB Josh Jacobs has rushed for 1,285 yards to rank fifth in the NFL… Jacobs has run for a touchdown in seven straight games, matching the longest such streak in franchise history. Paul Hornung had a touchdown run in seven straight games in 1960… Packers K Brandon McManus is 17 of 18 on field-goal attempts… Packers QB Jordan Love has thrown nine TD passes and no interceptions over his past six games. The most recent player to intercept Love was Chicago’s Terell Smith on Nov. 17.

2024 Week 16 — Saints at Packers

Packers continue their push toward playoffs as they host the injury-riddled Saints

Associated Press

New Orleans (5-9) at Green Bay (10-4)

Day / Time / TV: Monday, 8:15 p.m. EST, ABC, ESPN
Series record: Packers lead 18-10
Last meeting: Packers won 18-17 at Green Bay on Sept. 24, 2023.
Last week: Saints lost 20-19 at home to the Washington Commanders. Packers won 30-13 at Seattle.
Saints offense: overall (15-T), rush (11), pass (20), scoring (18)
Packers offense: overall (4), rush (4-T), pass (11), scoring (7)
Saints defense: overall (30), rush (27), pass (28), scoring (13-T)
Packers defense: overall (10), rush (9), pass (15), scoring (8)
Turnover differential: Saints plus-1, Packers plus-10

Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers don’t want to have to wait as long as they did last season to clinch a playoff berth. The Packers (10-4) have performed well enough that a little help could enable them to earn a postseason invitation on Sunday. If that doesn’t happen, the Packers still can wrap up a playoff spot by beating the injury-riddled New Orleans Saints (5-9) on Monday night at Lambeau Field. Last season, the Packers sneaked into the playoffs only after beating the Chicago Bears on the final Sunday of the regular season. “It definitely is a better position than having to try and win every game and fight for that last position not knowing what might happen,” Love said. “I think we did a better job this season winning some games early on and putting ourselves in a better position.”

The Packers have won eight of their past 10 games, with the only two losses in that stretch coming against the Detroit Lions. Green Bay remains behind Detroit and Minnesota in the NFC North. A loss or tie by the Atlanta Falcons coupled with a loss or tie by either the Los Angeles Rams or Seattle Seahawks would lock up a playoff spot for the Packers before Monday night’s game. The Falcons host the New York Giants, the Rams visit the New York Jets and the Seahawks host the Vikings on Sunday.

New Orleans’ long-shot chances of reaching the playoffs could vanish by the time Monday’s game begins. The Saints’ only path to the postseason is to win all their remaining three games while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Falcons lose their final three games. Tampa Bay plays at Dallas on Sunday night. The Saints could be playing this game without usual starting quarterback Derek Carr and five-time Pro Bowl running back Alvin Kamara. Carr has an injury to his left (non-throwing) hand that prevented him from playing in the Saints’ most recent game — a 20-19 loss to the Washington Commanders — though Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi hasn’t yet ruled him out for Monday. Kamara left the Commanders game with a groin injury that likely will sideline him for this matchup. If Carr is unable to play, the Saints would turn to Spencer Rattler, who came off the bench and led four straight scoring drives in the loss to the Commanders. “We have the players that we have,” Rizzi said. “Everybody across the league right now is dealing with injuries, some more than others. I think the best teams in the league are the teams that are able to overcome those, regardless of the position. That’s really how we’ve been approaching it.”

Love’s recovery

After struggling to protect the football during the first half of the season, Love has thrown seven touchdown passes without an interception over his past four games. Love had thrown 11 interceptions in his first eight starts of the season.

On the edge

Saints defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon could make his 2024 season debut on Monday night. He has been back at practice for about two weeks since recovering from an offseason Achilles tendon rupture. Rizzi said Kpassagnon was nearly activated for last week’s game against Washington. Kpassagnon, 30, is in his eighth NFL season. He played in all 17 games in a reserve role in 2023 and had 3½ sacks.

Cooper coming up big

Packers rookie linebacker Edgerrin Cooper’s performance in a 30-13 victory at Seattle on Sunday earned him NFC defensive player of the week honors for the second time this season. The second-round pick from Texas A&M had a sack, intercepted a pass and had two tackles for loss and two passes defended. Cooper is the first Packer since Clay Matthews in 2010 to be selected as the NFC defensive player of the week multiple times within the same season.

Ground reinforcements

With Kamara’s status up in the air, the Saints signed former LSU star running back and Louisiana native Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Edwards-Helaire recently was waived by the Kansas City Chiefs, with whom he has spent his entire NFL career since being drafted in 2020. Edwards-Helaire, who hasn’t played this season, started the week on the practice squad. He joins a position group with the Saints that also includes Kendre Miller, former Packer Jamaal Williams and Jordan Mims on the active roster.

Jacobs’ fast starts

The Packers are outscoring opponents 95-34 in the first quarter, thanks in part to Josh Jacobs’ productivity early in games. Jacobs has run for 688 yards in the first half of games, which represents the most first-half rushing yards by any NFL player. Kamara ranks second with 601 first-half yards rushing. He has 235 yards rushing in the opening drive of games, the most by any Packer since at least 2000. Jacobs has rushed for 1,147 yards overall to rank third in the league, behind Philadelphia’s Saquon Barkley (1,688) and Baltimore’s Derrick Henry (1,474) entering Week 16.

Saints player to watch

DE Chase Young is coming off a two-sack performance against the Commanders, who selected him out of Ohio State with the second overall pick in the 2020 draft. Green Bay’s offensive line has done a nice job of pass protection this season, but Young is talented enough to cause Packers QB Jordan Love plenty of headaches.

Packers player to watch

LB Edgerrin Cooper was the NFC defensive player of the week for the second time this season after getting eight tackles, picking off a pass and forcing a fumble with a sack against Seattle. The rookie second-round pick from Texas A&M is the first Packer to be the NFC defensive player of the week twice in the same season since Clay Matthews in Green Bay’s 2010 Super Bowl championship season.

Key matchup

Saints offensive line vs. Packers pass rush: Green Bay’s pass rush has been inconsistent, but the Packers are coming off a seven-sack performance against Seattle. Kingsley Enagbare led the way with two sacks. QB Spencer Rattler could start for New Orleans in place of an injured Derek Carr and the Saints won’t have much of a chance if he doesn’t have time to throw. The Saints are allowing just two sacks per game, putting them in a tie for eighth in the league.

Key injuries

Carr has an injury to his left (non-throwing) hand, although the Saints have said he will not be placed on injured reserve and that his status will be updated day to day… RB Alvin Kamara has a groin and adductor injury. Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi updated Kamara’s status Thursday by saying, “to be honest, it doesn’t look great for this week… Packers CB Jaire Alexander (knee) has missed four straight games, but he practiced fully Thursday… Packers S Javon Bullard (ankle) didn’t play against the Seahawks. … Packers LB Quay Walker left the Seahawks game with an ankle issue.

Series notes

The Packers rallied from a 17-point, fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Saints last season in Love’s first home start. Green Bay made its comeback after Carr left with a shoulder injury. New Orleans’ Blake Grupe missed a 46-yard field goal that would have put the Saints ahead with 1:05 remaining. Green Bay’s Rashan Gary had three sacks in that game… This is the first time the Packers and Saints have met at Lambeau Field in December or later. The Packers’ lone December home game against the Saints came in Milwaukee in 1973. … The Packers have won three of their past four home matchups with the Saints. Six of the past seven Packers-Saints matchups at Lambeau Field have been decided by single digits.

Stats and stuff

The Packers have won eight of their past 10 games and can clinch a playoff berth before Monday’s game with a loss or tie by the Atlanta Falcons coupled with a loss or tie by either the Los Angeles Rams or Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Even if the Packers don’t get that help on Sunday, they can clinch a playoff spot by beating the Saints… Rattler came off the bench and passed for 135 yards and a TD without an interception during the second half of last week’s game and led New Orleans on four straight scoring drives totaling 19 points… Rattler went 0-3 as a starter earlier this season… Saints QB Jake Haener made his first-career start last week but was replaced after the first half… Kamara had his 25th TD receiving last week to become the fourth player in NFL history (joining Marshall Faulk, Lenny Moore and Christian McCaffrey) with at least that many TD receptions and 50 or more TDs rushing (Kamara has 60). Kamara left last week’s game 7 scrimmage yards short of his fourth-career 1,500-yard season… Saints WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling had team-high 64 yards receiving last week and has 50 or more yards receiving in four of his past five games. Valdes-Scantling had 123 receptions for 2,153 yards and 13 TDs in 59 games with Green Bay from 2018 to 2021… Saints DE Cameron Jordan had two sacks last week, his 25th career multiple sack game. Jordan ranks second among active players with 120½ sacks… Saints DE Carl Granderson had a sack last week and has 5½ sacks in 2024… Saints DL Bryan Bresee has a sack in three of his past four games… LB Demario Davis led the Saints with a season-high 14 tackles and had two tackles for loss and a sack in Week 15. Davis has 104 tackles in 2024, his eighth straight 100-tackle season… Saints S Tyrann Mathieu had his seventh career forced fumble last week… This is the 32nd straight year the Packers have played on “Monday Night Football.” That represents the longest such streak in “Monday Night Football” history… Love has thrown seven touchdown passes without an interception over his past four games. Love was picked off 11 times in his first eight starts of the season… The Packers have scored at least 30 points in each of their past four games… Green Bay has allowed only five sacks over its past seven games. That’s the first time the Packers have yielded so few sacks in a seven-game stretch within the same season since 2007… Packers S Xavier McKinney has seven interceptions to tie Detroit’s Kerby Joseph for the NFL lead. His seven interceptions are the most by a Packer since Hall of Famer Charles Woodson had seven in 2011… Packers RB Josh Jacobs has rushed for 1,147 yards to rank third in the NFL entering Week 16, behind Philadelphia’s Saquon Barkley (1,688) and Baltimore’s Derrick Henry (1,474)… Packers TE Tucker Kraft has seven touchdown catches. The only tight ends with more are Baltimore’s Mark Andrews and San Francisco’s George Kittle, with eight each… Gary has had a sack in four of his past five games.
