First Game — City Stadium
On Sunday, September 29, 1957, the brand-new stadium for Green Bay Packers football hosted its first game. The home team was playing their traditional rival, the Chicago Bears. As can be seen by the aerial photo above, it was THE place to be on that Autumn day. Head Coach Lisle Blackbourn and his players accomplished a victory that day, 21-17 in front of 32,132 fans. There were many festivities leading up to the game that weekend, and several special guests were in town for the occasion, including the current Miss America, Vice-President Richard Nixon, and “Gunsmoke” actor James Arness. In the end, quarterback Babe Parilli hit receiver Gary Knafelc on the fourth-quarter go ahead touchdown pass.
