November Practice — 1962

After some lengthy postings the last few days, we’re going to take a “break” and put up images for a while. In today’s photo, it’s a practice in November 1962, and head coach Vince Lombardi is showing some finer points of defensive strategy to his gathered players. Bent over in front of the coach is defensive tackle Ron Gassert (#73), who only was with the team that year. Also seen is linebacker Ray Nitschke (#66), defensive tackle Henry Jordan (#74), defensive end Willie Davis (#87), and running back Lew Carpenter (#33). Although he was with the Packers for five seasons, Carpenter is not well-known among fans. After he played ten years in the N.F.L., Carpenter later spent 30 years as an assistant coach in the league for the Minnesota Vikings(1964-1966), Atlanta Falcons (1967-1968), Washington Redskins (1969), St. Louis Cardinals (1970-1972), Houston Oilers (1970-1974), the Packers (1975-1985), Detroit Lions (1987-1988) and Philadelphia Eagles (1990-1994).
