Post-Game Bart Starr
Here’s a fine shot of QB Bart Starr in the locker room after a game, possibly the 1961 N.F.L. championship. Next to Starr’s locker is Paul Hornung’s, and we see that on the name plate, he or someone else has placed a U.S. Army “Re-Up” sticker. Hornung was called to active duty during the 1961 season but was able to get weekend passes to play on Sundays. His coach, Vince Lombardi, was a friend of President John F. Kennedy, and it was arranged for a pass so Hornung could play in the NFL championship game against the New York Giants. It’s doubtful that anything like that could be pulled off today.
