PATRIOTS DEFENSE: OVERALL (11), RUSH (19), PASS (8), SCORING (22)

TURNOVER DIFFERENTIAL: Patriots minus-4; Packers minus-2

Aaron Rodgers is about to face a Bill Belichick-coached team for just the third time in his 15 seasons as the Green Bay Packers' starting quarterback.

While the two haven't matched up very often, they gained plenty of respect for each other from afar. They'll meet again Sunday when the Packers host Belichick and the New England Patriots.

''Best coach in the history of the game, I think,'' Rodgers said.

The Packers (2-1) and Patriots (1-2) have split the two previous matchups Rodgers started. Rodgers threw for 368 yards and two touchdowns in a 26-21 home victory over the Patriots in 2014. His 259 yards passing and two touchdowns weren't quite enough in a 31-17 loss at New England in 2018.

Rodgers also came off the bench to replace an injured Brett Favre and went just 4 of 12 for 34 yards in a 35-0 home loss to the Patriots in 2006, two years before he became the Packers' starting quarterback.

The four-time MVP has come a long way since, throwing 453 career touchdown passes with only 95 interceptions.

''He doesn't make very many mistakes,'' Belichick said. ''He never has. He's a very resourceful quarterback. He makes the plays that are there. Then he makes a few plays that really aren't there. Then he rarely makes a mistake where he has a bad play. There's very, very few of those. I think that's one of the things that makes him a great quarterback.''

Belichick's team enters this game with less certainty at quarterback.

Usual starter Mac Jones' has been ruled out after an ankle injury knocked him out of the Patriots' 37-26 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Veteran Brian Hoyer will be making his first start since 2020.

The difference in the two quarterback situations helps explain why the Packers are favored by 9 1/2 points, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

Even so, the Packers realize they can't take anything for granted when they're facing a guy who has won six Super Bowl titles as a head coach.

''He's the best of the best, regardless of sport,'' Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. ''It's not a shocker as to why he's won so many Super Bowls and why he's won so many games. He does a great job of taking what you do best away from you and keeping you off balance.''

CHANGING IT UP?

Jones averages 5.2 completed air yards per pass attempt to rank third in the NFL behind only New Orleans' Jameis Winston (5.7) and Miami's Tua Tagovailoa (5.4), according to Pro Football Reference.

How much the passing plan will change if Jones is unavailable is unclear. Recent history says there could be a significant drop-off if Hoyer is under center.

In 15 appearances since 2018, Hoyer has averaged only 3.6 completed air yards per pass attempt.

RUNNING BACK TANDEMS

Each of these teams relies on two running backs to share the load relatively equally.

Green Bay has Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon. Jones has 32 carries for 217 yards and nine catches for 76 yards. Dillon has 40 carries for 138 yards and eight receptions for 58 yards.

New England features Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson. Harris has 36 carries for 160 yards and six catches for 31 yards. Stevenson has 29 carries for 145 yards and seven catches for 34 yards.

SURGING PASS RUSHERS

New England's Matt Judon and Green Bay's Rashan Gary have both recorded a sack in each of the first three weeks.

They're not the only effective pass rushers on their respective teams.

New England's Deatrich Wise has a team-high four sacks and got three of them against the Ravens. Green Bay's Kenny Clark is coming off a two-sack performance in a 14-12 victory at Tampa Bay, and Preston Smith also has two sacks this season.

OUTSIDE MEN

Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones has an interception, two pass breakups and a pair of forced fumbles. It's helped him rate as Pro Football Focus' top player as his position through three weeks.

He's excelled most as an outside defender, where he's played more than 80% of his snaps this season. Jones said he's embracing the challenge of defending there as opposed to the slot thus far.

''You're definitely on your own,'' he said. ''It's a different perspective than being on the inside. There's not as many bodies between you and the quarterback.''

The Packers' top cornerback is Jaire Alexander, who missed most of the Bucs game with a groin injury.

ROTATING AT TACKLE?

Green Bay offensive tackle David Bakhtiari played against Tampa Bay, marking just his second game appearance since tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament on Dec. 31, 2020. Bakhtiari had played in the Packers' 2021 regular-season finale, but hadn't received any game action since until Sunday.

The Packers worked Bakhtiari in gradually by having him alternate series with Yosh Nijman at left tackle.

The team hasn't indicated whether they will continue that rotation against New England.

The New England Patriots have an uncertain quarterback situation as they prepare to visit the Green Bay Packers

PATRIOTS PLAYER TO WATCH: CB Jonathan Jones. He has been one of New England’s most active players in the secondary this season, logging an interception, two pass breakups and a pair of forced fumbles. He rates as Pro Football Focus’ top player as his position through three weeks.

PACKERS PLAYER TO WATCH: LB De’Vondre Campbell. The 2021 All-Pro selection is coming off a performance in which he had 14 tackles and got his hand on Tom Brady’s pass to foil a 2-point conversion attempt that would have tied the game with 14 seconds left.

KEY MATCHUP: Patriots RBs Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson vs. Packers run defense: New England’s uncertain quarterback situation may force the Patriots to rely on their running game. Harris and Stevenson have rushed for a combined 305 yards through the first three weeks. The Packers allowed Chicago’s David Montgomery to run for 122 yards two weeks ago, but followed that up by limiting Tampa Bay’s Leonard Fournette to 35 yards on 12 carries.

KEY INJURIES: Patriots QB Mac Jones has an injury that has ruled him out of Sunday’s game. Brian Hoyer will get the start in his nplace… Patriots DL Lawrence Guy didn’t practice early this week because of a shoulder injury… Packers WR Sammy Watkins (hamstring) is on injured reserve and will miss a second straight game. Packers WR Christian Watson (hamstring) didn’t play against Tampa Bay… Packers CB Jaire Alexander has a groin injury that knocked him out of the Tampa Bay game early. Alexander was practicing on a limited basis early this week.

SERIES NOTES: The Patriots own a 6-5 edge in regular-season matchups, but the Packers beat New England 35-21 in the Super Bowl on Jan. 26, 1997… The Patriots have won three of the past four meetings… In their most recent matchup back in 2018, the Patriots outscored the Packers 14-0 in the fourth quarter to win 31-17 at Foxborough.

STATS AND STUFF: Hoyer has 10,631 passing yards and 55 career TDs (53 passing, two rushing) in 75 games (39 starts). Hoyer has made starts for seven NFL teams during his 14-year career, but has lost his past 11 and amassed a record of just 16-23. The 2020 loss to Kansas City was his lone start with the Patriots, when he stepped in for Cam Newton who was out with COVID-19. But Hoyer was benched during the game in favor of Jarrett Stidham… Patriots K Nick Folk extended his streak to 57 straight field goals made under 50 yards with a 35-yard kick vs. Baltimore last week to set an NFL record. He had been tied with Ryan Succop (2014-17 with Tennessee) at 56 straight. Folk’s last miss from inside the 50-yard line was a 45-yard attempt on Sept. 13, 2020, against Miami… Patriots WR DeVante Parker led the team with five receptions for 156 yards in Week 3, his second career game with 150 or more receiving yards. He had five catches in his only career game at Green Bay in 2018… Patriots DE Deatrich Wise had career highs in sacks (three) and tackles for loss (four) last week… Green Bay is allowing opponents to convert just 22.6% of third down situations, giving the Packers the NFL’s top third down defense… The Packers haven’t allowed a single first down on 45.2% of their series. Only the San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles have better stats in that category… OLB Rashan Gary is the first Packer since Cullen Jenkins in 2010 to have at least one sack in each of the first three games of a season… Packers P Pat O’Donnell is the reigning NFC special teams player of the week. O’Donnell has landed nine of his 13 punts this season inside the opponent’s 20-yard line… The Packers are 6-0 at home against AFC opponents during Matt LaFleur’s coaching tenure. The Packers are 17-1 in Rodgers’ past 18 home starts against AFC teams… Packers OLB Rashan Gary and Patriots LB Matt Judon have both had a sack in each of the first three weeks… The Patriots and Packers have the NFL’s top regular-season winning rates since 2008. New England is 164-64 and Green Bay is 147-79-2 in regular-season games during that stretch.

SATURDAY INJURY REPORT:

NEW ENGLAND: OUT: DT Lawrence Guy (shoulder), QB Mac Jones (ankle), OT Yodny Cajuste (thumb), WR Jakobi Meyers (knee). QUESTIONABLE: S Joshuah Bledsoe (groin), S Kyle Dugger (knee), NT Davon Godscaux (back), LB Raekwon McMillan (thumb), CB Jalen Mills (hamstring), DB Adrian Phillips (ribs).

The Associated Press

GREEN BAY (1-1) at TAMPA BAY (2-0)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, 4:25 p.m. EDT, FOX
BETTING LINE: Buccaneers by 1½, according to FanDuel SportsBook.
SERIES RECORD: Packers lead 33-23-1.
LAST MEETING: Buccaneers beat Packers 31-26, NFC championship game, Jan. 24, 2021, at Green Bay.
LAST WEEK: Packers beat Bears 27-10; Buccaneers defeated Saints 20-10.
PACKERS OFFENSE: OVERALL (11), RUSH (6), PASS (20), SCORING (23).
PACKERS DEFENSE: OVERALL (10), RUSH (27), PASS (4), SCORING (7).
BUCCANEERS OFFENSE: OVERALL (24), RUSH (13), PASS (23), SCORING (18).
BUCCANEERS DEFENSE: OVERALL (5), RUSH (T9), PASS (8), SCORING (1).
TURNOVER DIFFERENTIAL: Packers minus 2; Buccaneers plus-4.

While Aaron Rodgers has a deep appreciation for what Tom Brady has accomplished during an unparalleled NFL career, he doesn't see himself following the seven-time Super Bowl champion's lead of playing well into his 40s.

''I'll be doing something else. I have a lot of other interests outside the game,'' Rodgers said, looking ahead to only the fifth head-to-head matchup of teams led by the star quarterbacks, who also are friends off the field.

''Game's been really really good to me. I feel I've given my all to the game,'' the 38-year-old Rodgers added. ''At some point, it'll be time to do something else, and I strongly believe that'll be before 45.''

Brady's already won two Super Bowls in his 40s. Less than six weeks after retiring in February, he announced he was returning for a 23rd season to pursue ''unfinished business'' with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who host Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

The league's all-time passing leader turned 45 during training camp. What impresses Rodgers most about Brady's longevity is how well he continues to play.

''The consistency where you're still playing at a high level and there's not the drop-off. Every great player fears turning into a real below-average player on the way out. I don't think anybody wants to really hang on,'' said Rodgers, who's in his 18th season - all with the Packers.

''Maybe some guys just want to get another year, or they're maybe on a team where they can do a lot less,'' Rodgers added. ''But when you've achieved at a high level for a long time, you try and stay there for as long as you can.''

The Packers quarterback has an admirer in Brady, too.

They've met four previous times as starters, with Rodgers' lone victory coming in 2014, when Brady was with the New England Patriots.

''He's an amazing player, has been for a long time. I love watching him play. He's from California, too, so I feel like we've got a little bit of a connection,'' Brady said. ''He's an older guy now. He's been a great player in the same place for a long time.''

Tampa Bay is 2-0 against Green Bay since Brady joined the Bucs in 2020, including a 31-26 victory in the NFC championship game two seasons ago.

SHORT-HANDED

The Bucs will play without leading receiver Mike Evans, who's serving a one-game suspension for his role in an on-field brawl at New Orleans last week. Brady could also be without two other primary targets - Chris Godwin (hamstring) and Julio Jones (knee) - who sat out against the Saints.

''Part of the job is to deal with different people being in. It's part of the demolition derby that's the game we play,'' Brady said. ''Guys are in and out. You've got to adjust.''

WATSON'S HOMECOMING

Packers rookie receiver Christian Watson went to Plant High School in Tampa and expects to have plenty of friends and relatives watching him Sunday. The second-round pick from North Dakota State has five catches for 43 yards through his first two games.

This won't be his first time playing at Raymond James Stadium. Watson said he played a youth league game there.

''That was definitely exciting playing as a kid, looking up and wanting to play in the league one day, to be able to play in an NFL stadium, that was really cool,'' Watson said.

DOMINANT DEFENSE

Tampa Bay is off to a 2-0 start despite Brady not being at his best during victories at Dallas and New Orleans. He didn't have to be, with the defense limiting the Cowboys to three points and not yielding a touchdown to the Saints until the fourth quarter of a 20-10 victory. The Bucs lead the NFL with 10 sacks and have forced six turnovers.

PROTECTING RODGERS

Rodgers has been sacked seven times this season, which doesn't bode well heading into a game against an opponent with a relentless pass rush.

Although both teams have changed quite a bit in time since, the Bucs beat the Packers twice during the 2020 season - including the NFC championship game - and collected five sacks in each of those wins.

''They definitely like to pressure quite a bit and then they do a great job of getting the ball out,'' Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. ''They're one of the best in the business, always punching at the ball. The guys in the secondary have really good ball skills, so that creates another problem.''

Green Bay's offensive line benefited last week from the return of tackle Elgton Jenkins, who was appearing in his first game since tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament last Nov. 21.

PACKERS PLAYER TO WATCH: RB Aaron Jones: He’s coming off a huge performance in which he rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries and caught three passes for 38 yards and another score. Jones struggled in the Packers’ two losses to Tampa Bay back in 2020. He rushed for 15 yards on 10 carries in the regular-season matchup and had a critical fumble in the NFC championship game while taking a hit that knocked him out for the rest of the day.

BUCCANEERS PLAYER TO WATCH: QB Tom Brady. He hasn’t needed to be at his best the past two weeks in beating Dallas and New Orleans on the road, mainly because the Bucs defense has been so dominant. Through two games, he’s thrown for 402 yards, two touchdowns and one interception after leading the NFL in completions, attempts, yards and TDs passing last season. The challenge this week is to get the Bucs offense rolling despite leading receiver Mike Evans serving a one-game suspension and the status of two other primary playmakers, Chris Godwin and Julio Jones, up in the air. Brady is 5-2 and has thrown for 15 TDs in seven career starts against Green Bay, including playoffs.

KEY MATCHUP: Packers QB Aaron Rodgers vs. Bucs defense, which has a league-leading 10 sacks and allowed just one touchdown in two games. Tampa Bay forced five turnovers against the Saints last week and lead the league in fewest points allowed (13) and are tied for second in opponent first downs per game (15) and opponent third-down conversion rate (25 percent).

KEY INJURIES: Packers OT David Bakhtiari hasn’t played yet this season and has appeared in only one game since tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament on Dec. 31, 2020. Godwin (hamstring) and Jones (knee), as well as Bucs LT Donovan Smith (elbow) didn’t play against the Saints. Their status for this week is uncertain.

SERIES NOTES: The Packers have won three of the past four regular-season matchups between the one-time NFC Central rivals.

STATS AND STUFF: The Packers and Bucs have the NFC’s two best regular-season records since 2020. The Packers have a 27-8 regular-season record, while the Bucs are 26-9… This is only the fifth time that Brady and Rodgers have faced off as starting quarterbacks. Brady’s teams have won three of the four previous matchups, most notably Tampa Bay’s 31-26 NFC championship game victory at Green Bay during the Bucs’ 2020 Super Bowl-winning season. Rodgers’ lone victory over a Brady-led team was Green Bay’s 26-21 home triumph over New England in 2014… The Packers allowed just one third-down conversion and seven pass completions last week against the Bears. The seven pass completions were the fewest they’d allowed in a game since 2005… Rodgers threw two touchdown passes last week to increase his career total to 451, becoming the fifth NFL player to have at least 450. Brady leads the way with 626… The Packers have committed only five penalties, the lowest total of any NFL team… Green Bay’s Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon are the Packers’ first running-back tandem to each have 20-plus carries and 100-plus yards rushing in the first two games of a season since John Brockington and MacArthur Lane in 1973… Packers OLB Preston Smith had two sacks and a team-high seven tackles against the Bears… This game will represent a homecoming for Packers rookie WR Christian Watson, a second-round pick from North Dakota State who went to Plant High School in Tampa… Evans is serving a one-game suspension for his role in an on-field brawl during Tampa Bay’s win last week in New Orleans. The Bucs signed veteran Cole Beasley to the practice squad as potential help while the team is short-handed at wide receiver.
