As we look back with the advantage of historical perspective, we see that while the 1962 “Salute to the Packers” predicted that Paul Hornung may have another “banner year” in 1963, we know what the editors of the magazine didn’t — that #5 would be suspended for the whole season for gambling. It was unfortunate for both parties, as Green Bay lost a chance to three-peat as N.F.L. champions to — of all teams — the eventual champion Chicago Bears.
Here’s a nice portrait of Hornung to cut out and paste on your wall with your other favorite Packers of the era.
The short article ends with this shot of Hornung scoring against the Packers’ other most-hated rival, the Minnesota Vikings at City Stadium in Green Bay.
After the game, you could have gone to the Zuider Zee Supper Club, where you just might have seen coach Lombardi and his entourage dining in celebration after a home victory.
