Packerville on Hiatus
Since the season has ended and interest in Packer football matters seem to wane in the late winter months, Packerville will take some time off to re-charge our pigskin batteries. Our staff at Packerville, U.S.A. headquarters (pictured above) will continue to locate and catalog interesting Green Bay Packers photos, stories, and memorabilia to share in the coming months after our break. We hope you will join us again when we get closer to the 2009 NFL season.

Cold Day in New York
For a cold, wintery day here in 2009, we have a photo from a very cold, wintery day in December 1962. The occasion is the NFL title game in Yankee Stadium, where we see Green Bay quarterback Bart Starr looking downfield for a receiver before he lets it fly. Of course, the Packers were victorious that day 16-7 over the New York Football Giants. It was the second NFL championship for Vince Lombardi.

Dave Hanner Day at City Stadium
During a Fall 1962 home game, most likely the Baltimore Colts game, defensive lineman Dave “Hog” Hanner was honored with “Dave Hanner Day” before the event. Hanner played for the Packers from 1952 to 1964, and later served as both coach and scout for the organization for a total of 42 years of service. He died from a heart attack this past September 11th at the age of 78. He is a member of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame.

Green Bay at Philadelphia — 1962
The Packers visit the Philadelphia Eagles in this photo from November 11, 1962. Although he has center Jim Ringo (#51) blocking, running back Tom Moore (#25) is being stopped by Philly’s defensive linemen John Gunnels (#74) and Bobby Richards (#68). Meanwhile, Hall-of-Famer Chuck Bednarik (#60) tries to twist off the head of Green Bay’s Ed Blaine (also #60). Regardless, the Packers crushed the Eagles 49-0 that day.

Vince Lombardi — Block of Granite
“The Seven Blocks of Granite” was a nickname given to the 1936 Fordham University football team's offensive line. The seven “blocks” were: Leo Paquin, Johnny Druze, Alex Wojciechowicz, Ed Franco, Al Babartsky, Natty Pierce, and future Green Bay head coach Vince Lombardi. The nickname was also commonly used to referred to the Fordham lines of the 1929, 1930, and 1937 teams but it is the 1936 line which is today the best known of these lines. Lombardi is seen third from left in the above photo, in jersey #40.

More Wrigley Field Action
Today we present more action from a Packers-Bears game at Chicago’s Wrigley Field in 1962. The Packers’ Willie Davis (#87) and Bill Forrester (#71) try to get to Bear quarterback Bill Wade (#9), while Mike Pyle (#50) blocks a leaping Dan Currie (#58). Also seen at right is Green Bay defensive tackle Dave Hanner (#79). The Packers won that day, 38-7.
