The Perpetual Green & Purple War

We have many family and friend contacts in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota — some are football fans and some are not. This came to our attention through these channels, and Packerville, U.S.A. is perhaps the only place you will come across it. This Artful Living issue is out in anticipation of Super Bowl LII which is to be played, for some reason, in a cold-weather climate. The high-end magazine features homes, decorating, clothing, and food of the highly cultured (and wealthy) in the Twin Cities. Interestingly, there was the following article on the long-standing (and perpetual) conflict between fans of the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers.

The Ice Bowl — in TIME

As a follow-up to last Sunday’s feature on the 50th Anniversary of The Ice Bowl, here is how the game was covered in the January 12, 1968 issue of TIME magazine. 


For some further background, let’s take a few looks at the world of 1968. On the cover was educator Samuel B. Gould, who at the time was President of the State University of New York (SUNY). The university system was the subject of a feature article inside.


You’re probably familiar with the Columbia Record Club, but there was also the Columbia Stereo Tape Club for those into the reel-to-reel stereo fad of the era. Serious audiophiles will take issue with my calling it a “fad,” but it was not the “mainstream” format


And here is what you could play your reel-to-reel musical selections on — perhaps after you returned from the Ice Bowl game and your fingers thawed out enough to work it.


As The Beatles sang at the time:

Flew in from Miami Beach BOAC

Some heavier reading from the issue: U.S. dead in Vietnam stood at 9,353 for the calendar year 1967, for a total of 15,997 since 1961... only 42,223 to go.

Get yourself a “Wide-Track Pontiac”... that car looks like it could take a corner at 80 m.p.h.


Two new albums were out: Bob Dylan’s John Wesley Harding and Arlo Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant — which led to a movie as well.

Here we are at the end of another season. This time, we’re not bemoaning an NFC Championship loss, but the first losing season since 2008. Big changes are afoot at 1265 Lombardi Avenue, and all of that coverage can be found elsewhere. The ad above was placed in today’s Green Bay Press-Gazette and Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. And now we move into the offseason, where speculation is high and actual news is low.
